Lee's Fried Chicken & Donuts is also getting in on the celebration:

Want to blame the day on someone? How about The Salvation Army? Seems that National Donut Day was started in 1938 in Chicago to honor of The Salvation Army “Doughnut Girls," who served along the front lines during WWI and WWII, giving soldiers free coffee and doughnuts.

In 1917, The Salvation Army, as part of its WWI mission overseas, began making and serving doughnuts for soldiers in France. Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance would fry the pastries in soldiers' helmets. They were nicknamed "Donut Lassies" and are credited with making the treat popular back in the States. Ever heard of "doughboys"?
