Kellogg To Close Houston Distribution Center, Cut 220 Jobs

Food giant is changing the way it delivers its snacks, so facility will be unnecessary.

You will still be able to buy your Raisin Bran and Special K, but the company behind those popular breakfast cereals is reducing its footprint in the Houston area after making a change in its snacks business. The move, which will see the closing of a distribution center and the loss of 220 jobs, will begin in late July.

In February, the company announced it would do away with its warehouse system and switch to a warehouse model whereby Kellogg will ship its products to its retailers' warehouses.

"As the distribution shifts from our network to our retailers' networks, so too will the work," Kris Charles, a company spokesman, said in an email, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. "We've been actively engaged in conversations with some of our biggest retail partners who have expressed strong interest in hiring these employees for high-demand roles once the transition is complete."

Kellogg's Houston warehouse is located at 3010 Claymoore Park Drive; the company said in a news release that it will give severance and benefits packages to affected employees.

In addition to the Houston job losses, 201 employees will be laid off in Fort Worth.
