Ohio Animal Shelter Saves 41 Houston Dogs From Death Row
Pecos, Jumper, Fumble and 38 other Bayou City canines owe their lives to Natalie Yeager.
Think of Natalie Yeager as an angel of life, because that's what she has given 41 stray dogs that were scheduled to be euthanized in Houston shelters. The canines, ranging in age from two months to four years old, were transported from Houston to Delaware County, Ohio, arriving there on June 29, and 10 of them have already been adopted in their new home state.
"Houston’s one of the worst parts of the country for stray dogs," said Yeager, who is the intake coordinator at the Humane Society of Delaware County, which is located in Delaware, Ohio.
Yeager, who lived in Houston for five years, volunteered for K-9 Angels Rescue while in the Bayou City, a non-profit group in Harris County that saves dogs from being euthanized. The idea to relocate the animals to Ohio came to her about a month ago, she told the Times Reporter, when she saw a Facebook post from K-9 Angels Rescue detailing the number of dogs that needed good homes in the Houston area.

"There was just so many puppies, and I was getting frustrated not being able to bring them in here," Yeager said. "There’s so many there and I need some of them here."
Yeager contacted Mary Tipton, a K-9 Angels volunteer, and the deal was done. The dogs' trip north took about 25 hours, and the $2,500 cost was paid for by volunteers.

“We crammed as many in the trailer as we could without being inhumane to the dogs," Tipton said, who thanked Yeager and the shelter. "It means we have 41 less dogs that we have to place here," she said.
The Texas dogs have proved to be popular at the shelter, so much so that a special Texas Puppies page has been set up on the organization's web site. You can see the Houston puppies in this video.
