Did You Eat Rat-Meat Chicken Wings During Super Bowl LI?

Story circulated online that rodent meat imported from China made it past the FDA has now been officially debunked.

President Trump hasn't Tweeted it yet, but millions of other people began doing so in the days leading up to Super Bowl LI: Rat-meat chicken wings had made their way into the U.S. and were going to be in restaurants and on grocery store shelves everywhere in America.

The reports claimed that agents in San Francisco had confiscated several containers of the "wings" but warned that more "might still be in circulation and could finish in American plates during the Super Bowl this Sunday."

Food and Drug Administration "officials" Ronald Jones and Allen James, according to the story, cautioned Americans that "it was too late for the produce that has already been sold on the market. It is up to consumer to try to identify the quality and source of the meat that is packaged, but there is no absolute way of deterring for 100% if the meat in your plate is chicken or rat."

The story apparently originated on a site called World News Daily Report, and was believed by millions of Americans. So much so, that the FDA issued a statement this week debunking the story.

FDA spokesman Peter Cassell told The Associated Press that the agency “is not aware of the seizure of rat meat referenced” and the FDA never issued such a warning. Cassell added that the FDA had no record of any current of past employees with the names of Ronald Jones or Allen James.
