The year has been a trying one for Bush, who was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital in January for “an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia.” He was released from the hospital on Jan. 30. Former First Lady Barbara Bush was also hospitalized in January, for bronchitis, and the husband and wife were patients in the facility at the same time.

Five days after his release from the hospital, Bush tossed the coin to open Super Bowl 2017, which was played in Houston.

Bush, who is 92, served as president from 1989 to 1993, and was Ronald Reagan's vice president. He also headed the CIA. He and his family are scheduled to travel to Kennebunkport, Maine, for vacation soon. Bush's doctors said he would continue treatment for bronchitis at home. Chronic bronchitis is common among the elderly and can exacerbate the symptoms of pneumonia.

The former president marked his 90th birthday by taking a tandem parachute jump in Kennebunkport. He has a type of Parkinson's disease and uses a motorized scooter to get around. He broke a bone in his neck in 2015 in a fall at home in Maine.
