Houston ISD Embarks On Student Voter Registration Drive

Teachers have been trained to help eligible students fill out proper paperwork.

HOUSTON, TX — It's been a tumultuous political season, and the effects of the 2016 presidential campaign are rippling still. Town hall meetings across the nation are standing-room-only events, newspaper and magazine subscriptions are up, and people young and old are taking renewed interest in politics and civics.

Houston ISD students are no exception, and many of them are taking advantage of the district's voter registration drive, which began this week.

“My vote is gonna count eventually,” José Gallegos, a student at Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center, told KUHF. “So I should register for what I want and, hopefully, one day I have the choice of be able to pick between somebody that I want and hopefully they win one day.”
