Houston's Best Weekend Concerts: Spicy Stadium Stars, Harmonica Master, and Folk Troubadour Bring the Noise

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonny Boy Terry, and Ellis Paul highlight the Bayou City's musical offerings

HOUSTON, TX — Who doesn't like a good show? The Houston area is full of great clubs and venues, and serves as host to a diverse lineup of talent both famous and unknown. This weekend is no exception.

First up, Ellis Paul plays the early show at McGonigel's Mucky Duck, taking the stage at 7 p.m. tonight. He's known as a folksinger, but I prefer to call him a storyteller. I saw him years ago in New York, and he's not let up since; he tours constantly, and his songwriting chops have grown stronger and stronger. Tickets for the show are a steal at $28 ($30 at the door). Here's Paul's "The World Ain't Slowing Down":

Also tonight, harmonica genius Sonny Boy Terry sets up at Shakespeare Pub. He's scheduled to go on at 9:30, and if you've never seen him live, don't miss this. The man is possessed, in a good way. His Houston street cred has been long established, and his brand of blues and musicality will leave you wanting more.

Finally, how about a real rock concert, put on by arena and stadium legends? You've got just that with Red Hot Chili Peppers. The California-based band plays Toyota Center on Saturday, January 7, and it promises to be good and loud. Flea and his mates have been around a long time, and they've amassed a loyal following with hits such as "Give It Away" and "Californication," to name but two. Get there early for Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, and Jack Irons. Tickets $49, $79, and $99.
