Hurricane Harvey: Texans-Cowboys Preseason Game Could Move To Dallas

Other area sports teams at pro, college and high school levels making adjustments on the fly

HOUSTON, TX — The city of Houston is scheduled to host two Dallas-area pro sports teams next week, but Hurricane Harvey might have a say in things. Harvey is now a Category 3 storm that's expected to make landfall Friday night and meander over the Texas coast, including Houston. The storm is projected to dump up to 15-20 inches of rain on Houston between Friday and Tuesday.

The Houston Texans are scheduled to host the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Aug. 31 at NRG Stadium. The teams traditionally play each other on the final preseason game each year and rotate the game site, much to the fans' delight. However, there's a possibility the game could move to Arlington next week.

"Let's see what happens," Texans coach Bill O'Brien told reporters Thursday about the Texans' plans to return home after Saturday's game. "Certainly if something does happen to that effect, we'll have to address it with our players. Family comes first. It's never football over family. It's football over a lot of things, but not family."

Astros-Rangers Series Next Week

The Houston Astros are currently in Los Angeles for a weekend series with the Angels and are scheduled to fly home on Sunday night. They are off Monday and are scheduled for a three-game series with the Texas Rangers starting Tuesday and the New York Mets are to come to town Friday-Sunday next week. The Astros are leading the American League at 77-50 and the Rangers are trying to win a playoff spot as a wild card.

"Right now, we're in a holding pattern," Rangers traveling secretary Josh Shelton told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of the team's plans to travel from Oakland to Houston on Sunday. "We'll know more once it makes landfall."

Sam Houston State Football Postpones Opener

The Sam Houston State University football team was scheduled to play a home game against the Richmond Spiders this Saturday, but that game has now been postponed, SHSU announced today. Sam Houston is located in Huntsville, which is more than an hour north of Houston. No make up date has been announced.

Houston Dynamo and Dash

The Houston Dynamo has rescheduled Saturday's MLS game against Sporting Kansas City for Oct. 11, and the Houston Dash of the National Women's Soccer League's will not play Sunday's game against the North Carolina Courage.

High School Football

The Houston ISD cancelled all school activities after 2 p.m. on Friday and to last through at least Monday. That could extend even farther if the weather plays out as expected. This means no volleyball matches or practices, no cross country, no football scrimmages this weekend and no practice. The first week of the football season is next week.

LSU vs BYU (Sept. 2 at NRG Stadium)

Officials from LSU and BYU are monitoring the situation and will make decisions next week on what they'll do for this highly-anticipated season opener.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and best wishes are with our neighbors in South Texas, and of course with our friends and family here in South Louisiana as Hurricane Harvey draws near," LSU said in a statement. "We know all too well the challenges of facing a storm of this magnitude and stand ready to assist in any way we can."
