A Chimpanzee Attacks His Owner, and You Can Have a Front-Row Seat to the Drama With The Catastrophic Theatre

Trevor just wants to communicate with his owner, but he's an ape and can't talk. You might have more in common with him than you think.

It's inspired by a true story, and touches on things both human and bestial, including love, relationships, communication, and fame.

"Trevor," written by Nick Jones, is about a 200-pound chimpanzee and his struggles to make connection, and it's set for the stage at Match in a production from The Catastrophic Theatre.

You see, Trevor was once famous, and even appeared in a commercial with Morgan Fairchild, but that has all changed, and there's the rub.

Dan Berowitz, writing about the play in The Los Angeles Post, sums up the conflict:

But that was then, and this is now. Trevor isn’t cute anymore and is no longer a baby: he’s big, he’s passed puberty, and that’s when chimps can become aggressive and problematic. Here, the problem is complicated by the fact that – in his monkey mind – Trevor still thinks of himself as a show-biz phenomenon. He misses the bright lights of Hollywood, and wants to get back to work. Which is why, when the show opens, we find him returning home from what he claims was a trip to Dunkin’ Donuts, made by driving mommy’s car.

The play contains humor, pathos, violence, and tragedy, and asks the question: What happens if we cannot communicate with the person on whom we most depend?

Tickets for "Trevor" — which opens on Friday, February 10, and closes on March 4 — are available here. Performances will take place in Match 3.

The story of the chimpanzee that inspired Jones, whose name was Travis, is a fascinating read, as well. Will art imitate life?
