2 Teens Killed In Multi-Car North Austin Crash

The wreck occurred just before 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Cameron Road and East Anderson Lane on Friday, police said.

AUSTIN, TX — Two teens died in a multi-vehicle crash in North Austin on Friday, police confirmed this week.

In an advisory issued on Tuesday, the Austin Police Department said the wreck occurred just before 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Cameron Road and East Anderson Lane along the westbound service road.

A police investigation revealed that a 2018 black Nissan Versa, which had been reported stolen on July 2, was traveling northbound in the 7600 block of Cameron Rd. At the same time, a box truck was traveling westbound in the 1500 block of the E. Anderson Ln. service road in the center lane, police said. Concurrently, a 2008 gold Chevrolet Malibu was stopped at a red light in the 7700 block of Cameron Road facing southbound, police added.

Officials said the driver of the box truck proceeded into the intersection with a green light at the same time the Nissan entered the intersection, running the red light. The box truck struck the passenger side of the Nissan causing it to then crash into the Chevrolet Malibu, according to the police account. One occupant in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:56 a.m., according to the police advisory. An additional occupant was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene just after 4:05 a.m. despite life-saving measured by first responders. The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu suffered minor injuries, police added, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police identified those who died in the crash as Julian Murillo, 15, and Gabrial Marmolejo, 16.

The incident marked the city's 45th fatal traffic crash of 2020, police said, resulting in 50 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were 43 traffic fatalities.
