Man Killed Trying To Cross Interstate 35 Stretch In North Austin

The July 10 incident left an unidentified Hispanic man estimated to be in his mid 20s dead while crossing road at around 4:30 a.m.

AUSTIN, TX — A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car in North Austin last week while trying to cross a streth of Interstate 35, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The incident dates to July 10 when an unidentified Hispanic man estimated to be in his mid 20s attempted to cross at the 11800 block of North Interstate 35 southbound just after 4:30 a.m. before being struck by a 2016 Hyundai Elantra that was traveling southbound in the center lane, police wrote in an advisory.

Emergency workers performed life-saving measures that ultimately proved futile, as the pedestrian was pronounced dead some 20 minutes later. Police noted the driver of the Elantra remained on the scene to cooperate with a police investigation. Driver impairment, excessive speed or adverse weather conditions were not factors leading to the crash, police said, and no charges are expected to be filed.

The incident marked Austin’s 42nd fatal traffic crash of 2020, police said, resulting in 45 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were 40 traffic fatalities.
