North Austin Taco Cabana Site Among Those Slated To Close

AUSTIN, TX — An Austin Taco Cabana location is among those slated for closure statewide as the company shutters its less profitable stores, officials disclosed this week.

In a press release, the restaurant chain's parent company said Monday it would close 19 eateries statewide deemed to be "under-performing." Among those is the one at 8620 Burnet Rd. in Austin, according to a list released by the company.

“The margin-improvement plan includes efficiency initiatives in operations across food and operating expense categories and the closure of 19 under-performing restaurants in Texas,” Fiesta Restaurant Group President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Stockinger said in a press advisory. “These closures eliminate all stores with significant losses, which we expect will result in a highly viable portfolio of restaurants.”

Fiesta is the parent company of Taco Cabana, and also owns the Pollo Tropical chain of restaurants. Stockinger added that nearly all of the affected employees would be offered positions at other restaurants ahead of the closures.

Other stores are scheduled to close in College Station, Dallas, Denton, Frisco, Houston, Lake Jackson, Richland Hills and Waco.

As of Sept. 29, Fiesta owned and operated 141 Pollo Tropical restaurants and 165 Taco Cabana units. The former are all located in Florida while the latter are in Texas.

The Dallas area has the most planned closures with eight, followed by the Houston area, where six stores are slated to be shuttered. The others stores scheduled to be closed are:
