Pedestrian Killed While Trying To Catch Bus: Austin PD

Nestor Phillip Yruegas, 50, was crossing mid-block as he tried to catch a bus on Airport Boulevard when he was struck by a car, police said.

AUSTIN, TX — A man was fatally struck by a car as he attempted to catch a bus in the northeast part of the city on Dec. 2, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. along the 3400 block of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to a police advisory. A police investigation showed that the pedestrian was crossing mid-block as he tried to catch a bus on Airport Boulevard when he was struck by a gray, 2017 Kia Sportage.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police account. He was identified as 50-year-old Nestor Phillip Yruegas.

Police said the incident marked Austin’s 80th fatal traffic crash of 2020, resulting in 84 fatalities this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were 80 traffic fatalities.
