Pflugerville Community Development Corp. Secures Top Honors

The Community Economic Development Award bestowed by the Texas Economic Development Council recognizes a deal with Amazon spawning 1K jobs.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — The Pflugerville Community Development Corporation recently received top honors as a statewide recipient of the Community Economic Development Award, officials said Thursday.

The award was for Texas populations 50,001 - 100,000 bestowed by the Texas Economic Development Council during the group's 2020 virtual annual conference this week, officials said in an advisory.

“The CEDA award recognizes our partnership with Amazon who worked hand-in-hand with the community bringing over 1,000 job opportunities and just-in-time delivery of a $250MM tax base during a pandemic,” Pflugerville Community Development Corp. Executive Director Amy Madison said. “The annual award is an outstanding achievement every year, but this year it takes on new meaning.”

In a Sept. 16 news release, Texas Economic Development Council Chairman Dale Fowler said the award recognizes the excellent work done by communities, their leaders, and economic development professionals.

“Each community nominated achieved excellence in economic development and substantially improved the economic base of their respective regions,” Fowler said in a prepared statement. “The recipient communities in each population category were recognized for extraordinary accomplishments in meeting the criteria set forth in the nomination process.”

Madison noted this marks the first time for the Pflugerville Community Development Corp. to receive the award, but noted that it is likely not the last.

“We thank the TEDC for recognizing our commitment to responsible economic growth and development. Pflugerville is growing and our leadership continues to focus on the needs of our local and future employers, so we hope these steadfast efforts will be recognized again in future years,” Madison said in a prepared statement.

In July, the PCDC Board and Pflugerville City Council announced the economic development performance agreement with Amazon.com, but efforts to recruit the new fulfillment center to Pflugerville were in process for over two years. The facility is expected to open in August 2021 bringing $250MM in capital investment and over 1,000 jobs to the Pflugerville community.

The Pflugerville Community Development Corp. was one of 34 statewide applicants who participated in six population categories. The Community Economic Development Award honors exceptional contributions of Texas Economic Development Council member cities toward the economic vitality of their communities and the state of Texas through creativity, leadership, and partnership in the achievement of business retention, business recruitment, and community improvement.
