Residents are reminded to exercise caution this Christmas and practice simple habits to avoid becoming a victim this holiday season.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX—As Christmas draws near, and many experience the frenzy of last-minute shopping, the Pflugerville Police Department reminds residents to exercise caution when out and about, and follow simple tips to stay safe and secure this holiday season. Burglars, muggers, and pickpockets can strike at any moment, but Christmas provides more incentives and opportunity for criminals to victimize individuals.

Staying alert and aware of your surroundings is likely the most important piece of advice you'll receive to prevent being targeted for theft. Shopping during daylight hours is beneficial to maintaining a clear view of everything going on around you. But for many, daytime commitments prevent them from taking advantage of daylight.

If you must shop in the evening, don't go alone. Let someone know your destinations and approximate time of return. Parking your car in a well-lit area is equally important, and keeping car doors locked when your are not inside your vehicle is a deterrent for thieves. Remember to not leave valuables inside the vehicle, or exposed to outside view. Garage door openers should be concealed in your car's glove box, and other items, including packages are best stored in your vehicle's trunk.

When you're shopping, be mindful and careful of your purse and/or wallet. Always keep your purse close to your body, and avoid it dangling by the straps. Wallets should be kept inside coat or front pants pocket, and never carry large amounts of cash on you. Avoid exposing your credit cards or cash unnecessarily, and as you leave premises, always observe any activity going on near your vehicle as you approach.

If you feel uneasy about exiting the store and going back to your car, ask the store's security guard or a store employee to assist you to your vehicle. Have keys at the ready as you prepare to enter your car, follow by locking all doors. Remember, never overload yourself when carrying packages to your car. If you anticipate making it a full day of shopping, consider dropping packages off at home and be mindful to always keep your garage door closed.
