Pflugerville Under Boil Water Notice Amid Plant Power Outage

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — Pflugerville residents are under a boil water notice after a power outage at the water treatment plant caused water pressures to fall, officials said Monday.

The prolonged power outage caused water distribution pressures to fall below 20 psi, prompting the boil water notice from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, officials wrote in an advisory. Water should be boiled prior to consumption — for washing hands and face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc. — to avoid ingesting bacteria that could have formed under the low pressure.

Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, officials noted. To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes, officials said.

In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or secure water from other suitable sources for drinking water or human consumption purposes, officials noted. When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the water system will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes, officials added.

Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, officials added, the public water system will issue a second notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice.

Residents were urged to share this information with others who drink from the affected water source, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). "You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail," officials wrote.

The City of Pflugerville has been working with Oncor, the electric service provider for the area, to get an estimated timeline of when repairs will be made and when power might be restored to the water treatment plant to enable crews to properly treat water again and allow the city to bring water distribution pressures back to normal levels.

"As we currently do not have an estimated time for repairs to be made to the electric infrastructure, we recommend gathering two gallons of potable water for every member of your household for a 72-hour period," officials wrote in their advisory. "You can do this by collecting water dripping from your faucets to prevent freezing."
