“In order to identify the cities that have expanded most rapidly in socioeconomic terms between 2008 and 2014, WalletHub compared 515 U.S. cities of varying sizes across 10 key metrics, ranging from population growth to unemployment rate decrease,” WalletHub explained on its website.

They looked at two key factors: the socio-demographic landscape and the jobs and economic environment.

“For the most part, it is a good thing when cities grow — as urbanist David Rusk stated, when a city isn’t growing, it’s declining. The main problem is that housing prices can skyrocket and that often means that the working class and poor people get displaced. A city needs to create a balance, which is difficult,” Joan Fitzgerald, professor of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University, told WalletHub.

“Another challenge is for infrastructure to meet the demands created by growth. In cities with public transit systems, it may be difficult to keep up with demand in ridership. Add more roads? That only means more traffic congestion, so it is a fine balance,” she said.
