Multiple TX Tornadoes Sweep Through Austin Metro: NWS

Tornado warnings in the Austin metro issued by the National Weather Service have expired after several tornadoes touched down in the area.

ELGIN, TX — Multiple tornadoes were confirmed on the ground in the Austin metro during a wave of thunderstorms that swept through the area Monday evening.

A "large, extremely dangerous" tornado was confirmed on the ground in Elgin moving northeast at 35 mph at approximately 6:38 p.m. and as of 7:15 p.m. was located 7 miles northwest of Lexington and moving at 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

A tornado warning in relation to the storm expired in north central Lee County at 7:30 p.m. A warning for Travis County expired at 7 p.m. and one for Williamson County expired at 7:15 p.m.

Another tornado warning for a storm near Smithville expired at 7:45 p.m. in southeastern Bastrop County, south central Lee County and northwestern Fayette County.

Video from CBS Austin shows extensive debris and damage to houses in the Elgin area. A Twitter user posted video of discharges coming from power lines as the tornado crossed FM 1704.

Earlier, a tornado was confirmed on the ground in Williamson County near Jarrell as well as another in Round Rock, according to the NWS.

Video posted to the KVUE Twitter account shows a tornado moving quickly past the Dell corporate offices in Round Rock. Photos from CBS Austin showed damage to the Chili's in Round Rock.

There also were reports of structure damage in Jarrell.

It is unclear if the tornadoes caused any casualties.

As of 7:30 p.m., more than 22,000 customers in Williamson County were without power. More than 4,000 customers in Travis County and nearly 1,700 in Bastrop County didn't have power, according to poweroutage.us.
