Changes Coming To San Jacinto College In 2019

San Jacinto College will host groundbreakings on four new facilities this fall at all three campuses, officials said.

PASADENA, TEXAS – Changes are coming to the San Jacinto College District that will create a conduit for workforce creation for many years. College district leaders said they are moving forward with plans on several key facilities in 2019.

Groundbreaking events are planned in the fall for the Welcome Center at the Central Campus, the Center for Engineering and Technology and the Cosmetology Center on the South Campus, and the Cosmetology and Culinary Arts Center on the North Campus.

Voters in the San Jacinto College District approved a bond referendum in November 2015, which focused on making infrastructure improvements and adding new facilities to the district designed to provide skills training for the Houston area workforce.

“We are grateful to the voters and taxpayers in our district who approved the bond referendum in 2015,” Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College Chancellor said in a statement. “We are committed to providing the right space for learning for our students and we remain dedicated to being the leading workforce training partner for the region’s growing economy and industries.”

The groundbreakings of the facilities start in September with the Cosmetology Center on the South Campus on Sept. 7 and wrap up with the Central Campus Welcome Center groundbreaking on Oct. 19.

However, some facilities are already beginning to take shape.

By mid-2019, San Jacinto College plans to open the 145,000 square foot Center for Petrochemical, Energy, and Technology next year on the district’s Central Campus. The Center, which comes with a $60 million price tag, will house programs in process technology, instrumentation, electrical technology, and non-destructive testing and craft trades, officials said in a news release.

“From the beginning stages of planning, the industry has had a seat at the table for the vision, the design and the curriculum of the Center,” Jim Griffin, associate vice-chancellor and senior vice president for the College’s petrochemical training division said in a statement. “This facility will ensure that San Jacinto College produces graduates with the right skill sets to meet the workforce needs.”
