Pasadena Man Identified Among Dead In San Marcos Fire

Officials have confirmed the identities of three of the five victims killed in an apartment fire in San Marcos last week.

SAN MARCOS, TX -- A Pasadena man who was reported missing with four other after an early morning apartment fire has been positively identified by the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office as one of five killed in an apartment fire July 20.

David Ortiz, 21, was an engineering student at Texas State University, and one of the hundreds who lived at the Iconic Village and Vintage Pads Apartments, only a few miles from the campus. The fire killed five people, injured seven others, and left 200 residents homeless, fire officials said.

On Thursday, three of the victims were positively identified as Ortiz, Dru Estes, 20, of San Antonio, and Haley Michele Frizzel, 19, of San Angelo.

The identifies of the remaining two victims have not been officially released, but they are believed to be James Miranda and Belinda Moats, who were listed among the missing.

Ortiz was a graduate of Pasadena Memorial High School, where his mother Gina Ortiz, is a teacher.
Fire officials have not yet ruled on what caused the fire.
