Mental Health First Aid Offers Basic Tools To Help Others
MHFA gives participants valuable education on ways to assist someone who is struggling with mental illness or in the midst of a crisis.
ROUND ROCK, TX — Mental health is an important topic impacting communities across our country and is a discussion needing to be had in order to create solutions for treatment and management. Talking about mental health also serves to remove the stigma, and emphasizes the notion that those struggling with mental illness are not alone.
The Round Rock community is invited to an important training that centers on strengthening the community and potentially saving lives. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour class providing people with the basic tools to help someone who may be developing mental health issues, or experiencing a mental health crisis. MHFA can save a life in the same way CPR saves lives.
MHFA is important because mental illness is common and affects approximately 1 in 5 adults, with 50% of mental health issues being identified by the age of 14. MHFA is open to anyone interested in lending support to family, friends, colleagues, and community members. Those participating will learn the warning signs and risk factors for mental illness; information on sign and symptoms of depression; anxiety; trauma; psychosis; and substance use disorder. MHFA is a 5-step action plan to help those showing signs of mental illness or experiencing a crisis, and provides professional and self-help resources.
