Here are the top three stories today in Round Rock:
- Qasim Choudhary moved to Round Rock in January to become the first full-time imam of the Baitul Muqeet Mosque. As imam, he leads "more than 300 members in daily prayers and Islamic education." Choudhary "hopes to use his new position to build relationships with community members of all faiths and to educate others about Islam to help dispel common fallacies about the Islamic community." (Austin American-Statesman)
- Demolition began this week on the Cactus Nights Sports Bar, at 109 N. Sheppard St. in Round Rock. The building was constructed in the 1940s according to a 2010 city of Round Rock historic resources survey. The Villarreal family, which owns the Long Branch Saloon and La Esquina Cantina, recently purchased the property and will build a new dance hall and bar with a two-level structure and a patio. (Community Impact)
- Senior Access is an organization that provides free rides to seniors in the Round Rock area who have no other way to get around. After being alone due to COVID-19, the trips are not just about getting supplies at the store, it's a "time for these seniors to get out and enjoy life" and talk to each other on the bus. Senior Access also offers simple household repairs and light yard work. They are looking for volunteer drivers and "senior buddies" who do the shopping for the seniors. (KVUE)
