ROUND ROCK, TX— In 2017, the U.S. Census reported statistics indicating 8.2% of the population determined in Round Rock, TX (9.8K out of 116K people) live below the poverty line. For many, extreme economic hardship impacts daily life for individuals and their families, and includes difficulty meeting the basic needs for the household. As a result, community resources and social services provide a life-line to low-income individuals and families and offer a respite from the challenges associated with economic crisis.

On Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., the Round Rock Police Department and the U.S. Army partner for the 2019 Hike for Hunger Food Drive benefitting the Round Rock Area Serving Center. The hike includes a 2-mile trek from the U.S. Army Round Rock Recruiting Center to the Round Rock Area Serving Center carrying rucksacks filled with food. The community is invited to participate and hike alongside members of the Police Department and the U.S. Army.

The Round Rock Area Serving Center offers a host of programs and services for the community. Its Food Pantry offers a healthy pantry initiative that promotes the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables. To date, the pantry processed more than 1.6 million pounds of food to qualified recipients within the community. The Healthy Options Program for the Elderly (H.O.P.E.) and the RR Area Serving Center's Community Gardens, operating under the supervision of the Williamson County Master Gardeners, supports the food pantry with over 4,000 pounds of fresh produce annually.

In addition to the Food Pantry, the Serving Center also offers clothing and furniture vouchers, Computer for Kids, Keep Round Rock Warm, alternative loan repayment program and financial assistance (utilities, rent, prescriptions, transportation & temporary lodging). These programs help families in crisis, and the Serving Center relies on the generous support of the community to help provide these much needed services.

Donations of nonperishable food items will be collected during a Fill the Cop Car event on Saturday, Nov. 9 at HEB grocery stores throughout the City.
