Ali Slutsky shares charming under-the-radar southern destinations perfect for a weekend getaway.

Every popular vacation spot comes with a list of reasons “why” you should visit it. Culture, food, weather; the list goes on. However, when you’re looking for a new destination full of those previously mentioned characteristics and then some, the south can provide you with an abundance of options! Whether it’s an extended stay or a short weekend getaway, a southern destination will provide you with charm, lovely southern hospitality, and endless opportunities for relaxation and loads of entertainment! If you need a break from the day to day monotony of real life and are looking for a southern destination aside from the ever-popular city of New Orleans (although, still always a great option) consider some of these perfect under-the-radar getaways:
Charlottesville, VA
If you’re looking for a peaceful destination full of culture, history, and beautiful scenery, all while experience the beauty of wine country, Charlottesville may be the perfect option. Take a trip to this scenic city to visit stunning mountain trails and some of the best wineries and vineyards in the South! You can begin your day with an outdoor adventure, exploring the trails and mountain views, and end with a downtown experience for some fantastic shopping, and top-rated bars and restaurants! Additionally, if you’re a music fan, specifically Dave Matthews Band (formed in Charlottesville), you can visit some of the local areas where the band had its start!
Columbia, SC
The heart of South Carolina, and a recently up and coming travel destination, Columbia is full of creativity, art, and vibrant energy. The beautiful downtown area is full of restaurants, shops, and independently owned boutiques. Not only can you find some really great items, but you can have the pleasure of knowing you’re supporting plenty of local business owners. If you’re searching for a food-filled trip, Columbia may be the spot for you. Indulge in delicious southern cuisine at some of the local restaurant spots.

Knoxville, TN
When you think Tennessee, your first thought might be Music City (Nashville) or a booming place like Memphis. However, the real destination that should be on your radar is the city of Knoxville. While it may be small in comparison to the previously mentioned, the beautiful city still has a lot to offer. Become one with nature as you adventure into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or take a trip to the Historic Market Square and Knoxville farmers market for an all around experience of shopping, food, music, and local culture!
Bowling Green, KY
Famously known as the home of the National Corvette Museum (if you’re a car person, this could be a little slice of heaven on Earth), Bowling Green has tons of fun activities to offer its visitors. Find shopping in Fountain Square Park, or take an adventurous trip to Lost River Cave, where you can explore the beauty of the caves on an exciting boat tour, or soar from above on the caves zipline! Either way, you’re bound for a fun experience.
