Firm Buys 7 Buildings At South Austin's Met Center Development

Met Center recently garnered unwanted attention for labeling largely Latino East Austin as "Tortilla Canyon" on a novelty map.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — World Class Holdings has purchased a seven-building portfolio on 45 acres at Met Center in South Austin, according to a published report.

The acquisition adds to the company's Austin portfolio that already includes the 156-acre 3M campus in North Austin and considerable downtown holdings, Bisnow reported. World Class Chief Operating Officer Sheena Paul said the purchase includes 400,000 square feet of creative office, data center and flex space, the site reported.

The portfolio World Class bought last month within the 550-acre Met Center development is at 8201 East Riverside Drive and 7401 East Ben White Drive (near the intersection of Ben White and Riverside Drive, near Oracle's new campus) and at 7620 Metro Center, near the intersection of US 183 South and Riverside Drive.

The Met Center recently garnered unwanted attention after its developer, Zydeco, included a novelty map on it website outlining the various parts of the city. Among those delineated zones was "Tortilla Canyon," a nickname given to East Austin that is largely inhabited by a Latino population. The gaffe caused quite a bit of outcry locally, not the least reason being that the company sought city business in the form of a lucrative, multi-year deal at one of its buildings for the downtown municipal court (which the company recently secured despite the pejorative on the map).
