Historic Paramount Sign Returns to Austin Theatre on Sept. 23

The iconic sign will come back to life at a celebration for the theater's 100th year.

Austin Theater is not only celebrating its 100-year anniversary, it’s also bringing back the iconic Paramount sign, which was removed in the 1960s for refurbishing.

The sign will be relit during a celebration party on Sept. 23. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. There will be a street party on Congress Avenue with different viewing areas for the re-lighting. There’s also a concert by Patty Griffin at 8 p.m.

β€œWe originally assumed the blade was maroon with gold trim simply due to the fact that the current marquee indicates this color scheme. However, we recently located a number of color postcards of Congress Avenue suggesting that the blade was actually green with a yellow/white border,” theater officials said.
