Psychedelic Mushroom Operator is Arrested in South Austin

The man's bail is set at $40,000 for three charges.

Police have charged Jason Michael Johnson, 30, with producing illegal drugs after discovering an illegal psychedelic mushroom growing operation in South Austin.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Johnson has been charged with three counts of felony drug possession. The most severe charge of the three is a first-degree felony for 6.5 pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms (psilocin) that police found in Johnson’s home at the 6300 block of Berkeley Cove, according to an arrest affidavit.

There were also small, perforated sheets of paper that tested positive for the hallucinogen dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT, and more than 13 grams of liquid THC, the narcotic chemical in marijuana, police said.

According to the affidavit, police searched through Johnson’s home on Aug. 27 while he was not there and found that a bedroom had been turned into a laboratory that had mushrooms growing and recently harvested. Police seized 30 pounds of mushrooms that weighed 6.5 pounds dried out. Johnson’s bail is set at $40,00 for the three charges.
