South Austin School Placed On Lockdown Over ROTC Prop

Crockett High School was placed in lockdown mode early Wednesday before police determined the item spotted was benign.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Crockett High School in South Austin was placed in lockdown mode Wednesday morning before the all-clear was given after it was learned the student involved was merely carrying an color guard prop, police said.

The item prompting the lockdown ended up being a prop used by an ROTC cadet, according to officials. The student was using the prop during a military training drill, police said.

The lockdown occurred at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday before it was lifted around 45 minutes later. A lockdown is defined by the school district as a temporary sheltering technique marked by stoppage of all school activity in the wake of a threat.

The incident marked the second time in as many days area schools were placed in lockdown mode for what amounted to be a false alarm. Three schools in Round Rock was placed on lockdown mode on Monday afternoon after a report about a man with a gun next door, according to reports.

Deep Wood Elementary School, Chisholm Trail Middle School and Round Rock High School were placed on a lockdown mode Monday afternoon before the all-clear was issued about an hour later, according to reports. The move was prompted after a call to police related to a man seen with a gun at a home adjacent to Deep Wood Elementary along St. Williams Avenue, police told media outlets.

A Round Rock ISD spokesperson told KVUE Deepwood Elementary was placed on lockdown at 3:08 p.m. while Chisholm Trail Middle School was placed on lockdown mode at 3:30 p.m. The spokesperson told the news station Round Rock High School also was placed on lockdown, but officials didn't specify the length of time.
