Torchy's Tacos Closing South Austin Food Truck With Freebies

'We're revving up the trailer for one last ride,' official, referring to block party featuring free tacos, queso, music and beer samples.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Torchy's Tacos is no more. Relax, taco fans, we speak only of the chain's food truck in South Austin that will be shuttered for unexplained reasons on Wednesday.

Officials at Torchy's Tacos have announced their Trailer Park location will close for good on Wednesday, March 7. But not before they have a bona fide taco party to thank customers. Restaurant officials announced a “Thank You Austin” block party on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. during which they'll give away tacos and green chile queso.

Oh, and those free tacos will be distributed via "taco cannon." They're wrapped tacos, so don't worry about a mess being made. We presume the queso won't be shot through the cannon but will be distributed manually, otherwise that would be a real mess.

In keeping with the party theme, there will be live music and beer sampling. Torchy's Tacos also will donate $1 to the Texas School for the Deaf on every taco sold, officials said.

The closure of the taco trailer, a longtime fixture at the food park at 1311 S. 1st St., is not a sign of weak sales. Since the trailer opened in 2006, Torchy’s Tacos has grown to 13 restaurants in the Austin area and others across Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma.

“Without the love from the city of Austin, we would have never been able to make these taco dreams come true," Michael Rypka, founder and vice president of marketing and culinary, said in a prepared statement. "To thank y’all for the years of support and countless tacos consumed, we’re revving up the Trailer for one last ride.”

So if you've got nothing going on Wednesday evening, you might want to get your taco on. Long live tacos.
