South Austin School Placed On Lockdown Mode

Police said lockdown mode was prompted by man in the vicinity of the school, but said later no threat to students, staff was imminent.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Travis Early College High School was placed on lockdown mode when an armed man was spotted nearby, police said.

Police officials said the campus was locked down given the proximity to the unidentified man. After a brief standoff with police who tried coaxing him into dropping the firearm, the man reportedly turned the weapon on himself and died at the scene.

Original reports indicated the incident involved two men, but those early accounts were later corrected.

Officials stressed the individual at no time made contact with school staff or students. While the situation was defused by noon, school officials kept the lockdown mode in place as added precaution, district officials said.

School officials sought to assuage parents, students and teachers, stressing via Twitter that no further threat existed. Officials added that added police would remain at the school in an abundance of caution. Later, school district officials acted to have the lockdown mode officially lifted.
