New Year's Fireworks Ignites Garage In Spring

Most of the damage from the fire was confined to the garage and a car that was parked in the driveway.

SPRING, TX β€” Improper use and disposal of fireworks led to a disastrous New Year’s Day at one Birchgate home. Firefighters from Spring, Ponderosa and Aldine were called to a house fire in northwest Harris County early on Jan.1, 2019.

When firefighters arrived they found flames coming from the garage, which they were able to contain and extinguish in a short time.

The combined efforts of the three departments made it possible to extinguish the flames with no injuries, fire officials said.

Investigators said the homeowner had failed to fully extinguish fireworks before tossing them into a trashcan. The fireworks smoldered and ignited trash, which caused the fire, officials said.

Officials said fireworks and debris from fireworks should be hosed down after use, placed in a garbage bag filled with water, and then left to sit outside overnight.
