Flower Power In Full Bloom At Tomball's "Groovfest"

Tombal celebrated all things 60s with its first-ever Groovfest at the Tomball Depot on Saturday. It was groovy, baby.

TOMBALL, TX -- The newest addition to Tomball’s award-winning line-up of annual festivals was a far out and solid success recently as close to 6,200 groovy festival goers attended Tomball's β€œGroovFest” on Saturday.

More than 75 vintage Volkswagen Beetles, vans, and more filled the downtown Depot Plaza surrounded by sounds of classic British Invasion tunes from tribute bands The Fab 5, Von Hindenburg, and Picture Book.

Flower Power was in full force as 5,000 daisies were passed out to guests, many of whom were outfitted in tie-dye, ragged cut-off jeans and other β€˜60s style garb.

Hula Hoop contest winner Mindy Lay of Houston managed to shoop-the-hoop without dropping it while rocking to β€œTwist & Shout” performed by the Fab 5. Mindy was awarded a special peace sign plaque for her throwback talent.

Next up on the Tomball festival calendar is the third annual Freight Train Food Truck Festival on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the historic 1907 Depot at South Elm and Market Streets. Two dozen rolling gourmet kitchens will be serving a wide assortment of cuisines during performances by Walter Suhr & Mango Punch, and Troy Hess & the Texas Heartbreakers. Gates open at 11. Admission and parking are free.

The following weekend, on Oct. 27 is the long running Tomball Bluegrass Festival. Headlining this year’s event are Alabama Bluegrass Hall of Famers David Davis & the Warrior River Boys. Returning will be the Shade Tree Jam in the courtyard of Granny’s Korner Antiques at Walnut and Market Streets.

The β€œJam” allows folks to bring their own instruments, settle back beneath shade, and strum and pick their favorite tunes with other Bluegrass lovers. The music starts at noon.
