Shenandoah, TX β€” Without community leaders, The Woodlands wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Debbie Pilcher, a Woodlands reader who nominated Charles Ballmer (Charley).

How do you know this community leader?

He serves as the secretary for the City of Shenandoah's Civic Club, and I am the city representative.

What does this community leader do?

Not only does he serve as the secretary for the Civic Club, he is one of the most dedicated volunteers for our community outreach programming for the City of Shenandoah. He is at almost every event, serving the community and bringing his huge smile to the event. In addition, he coordinated a vounteer wing of the group called Neighbors Helping Neighbors where they do honey-do chores for residents who are unable to do those chores for themselves.

He works with [a] local Scout troop that participates in the making of the traditional luminaries for which the city is known on Christmas Eve. He and the Scouts also participate in keeping neighborhood resident flags in the proper condition, often replacing the damaged flags from his own pocket.

He attends one of the City Council meetings where he gives an update on the Civic Club activities for the month. Charley is always quick with a hand or a smile when anyone needs a hand.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

Heis one of the most positive people you can meet in a world full of negative people most often getting the attention. He is truly involved in any way he can in his community and ... every town would be blessed to have a Charley.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero?

Charley never meets a stranger and never passes up a chance to help his fellow man.
