BVI Says No Delta Variant Detected

Officials in the BVI say they haven't found proof of the Delta variants, or other variants, in the territory, also report six more deaths.

TORTOLA, BVI — The British Virgin Islands released a statement that they have not identified any variants in the territory. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Health and Social Development, "no variants of concern or variants of interest were identified in the results of 37 COVID-19 samples sent to the Caribbean Pharmaceutical Association (CARPA) for genetic typing."

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ronald Georges said, “The variant identified is predominantly found in the United States of America.”

As of July 18, there were 1,604 confirmed active cases in the British Virgin Islands. On July 20, the territory reported six more COVID-19-related deaths, bringing the total to 23.

BVI officials are still rushing to vaccinate residents. On July 27, they reported receiving an additional 3,040 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the United Kingdom.
