π± Former Hospital CEO Conviction Overturned + Carnival Is Coming
The quickest way to get caught up on the news, upcoming events, an everything else happening in the USVI.
Good morning and let's start this beautiful Saturday with everything you need to know going on in the territory this weekend.
- The 70th edition of Carnival Virgin Islands is scheduled for April 21-May 1. The theme is "A New Cultural Roogadoo for Carnival 2022." The event will include a J'ouvert celebration, the re-crowning of the territory's first carnival queen, a food fair, a boat race, a Children's Village and more. Proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test taken within 24 hours of each event is required to attend and participate, via the VI Consortium.
- The former CEO of Schneider Regional Medical Center who was charged with racketeering, fraud and embezzlement ten years ago has been cleared of wrongdoing. Amos Carty Jr. was a St. Thomas attorney and held multiple executive positions at Schneider Regional before he was removed by the hospitalβs board of directors and accused of fraud. Full story in The Source.
- Governor Albert Bryan named four financial managers to help oversee and manage the refinancing of the Internal Revenue Match Fund Bonds, also known as the rum cover over funds. Bryan's administration says that the savings created by refinancing the bonds will be used to restore the solvency of GERS for the next 30 years. Three of the four appointees have ties to a Delaware-based company, CSC Global Financial Markets. Read more in the VI Consortium.
- You might want to skip swimming in Great Cruz Bay on St. John for a few days. According to DPNR's latest Beach Water Quality Monitoring results, Great Cruz Bay tested high for bacteria. See the full DPNR report here.
A correction: Earlier this week, we shared a story from The Source referring to Dr. Glenda Wrensford as the territory's only Black, female general surgeon. This statement is incorrect and has since been redacted by The Source. In fact, in 2016 The Source featured a profile of Dr. Renee N. Georges, who at the time was serving as chief of surgery at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital.
Today's weather: Mostly sunny and pleasant. High: 82 Low: 74.
