U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — By Thursday morning, Larry was officially a hurricane. Currently located over the eastern Atlantic, Hurricane Larry is moving west at 17 mph and is expected to turn west-northwest over the weekend, avoiding landfall.

Experts at the National Hurricane Center say the storm grew in strength faster than they originally anticipated and warn that it will likely intensify quickly over the next few days. In fact, forecasters say Larry is expected to qualify as a "major hurricane" by Friday night.

Still, the expected path steers clear of land and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has not released any coastal watches or warnings.
