U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — While most folks are singing gratitude that Hurricane Sam is turning northwest and away from land, others are grabbing their surfboards.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association issued a warning that large swells generated by Sam will reach the Virgin Islands. The waves will be big, say experts. Maybe too big. One advisory warned of "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions."

The swell is supposed to pick up on Thursday and Friday and may last through the weekend. Keep an eye on conditions and surf reports. And keep your surfboard handy.
