New Director Of Cannabis Regulation, Will New Policy Follow?

Hannah Carty was tapped to run the V.I. Office of Cannabis Regulation. She hinted at the arrival of new cannabis policies in the territory.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Hannah Carty is the new Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Office of Cannabis Regulation, according to a statement released today by the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs.

Ms. Carty is currently the Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture. She will continue to serve in that capacity for six to eight weeks before transitioning to her new role.

"Cannabis in all its facets, has demonstrated its ability to improve health outcomes, increase sustainability, and has the potential to be a revolutionary driver of the economy here in the Virgin Islands," said Ms. Cary. "I am so grateful and excited to be afforded this opportunity which will shape the future of cannabis policy here in the Territory."

Ms. Cary also indicate that new cannabis policies are forthcoming, but did not provide any details.

The announcement caught some residents by surprise, as there was little notice that the Cannabis Advisory Board would be holding a meeting. Department Commissioner Richard Evangelista announced on Wednesday at midday that the Cannabis Advisory Board would be meeting that afternoon.
