U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — With winds near 140 mph and higher gusts, Hurricane Sam is now officially a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. And it is getting stronger. Sam is expected to strengthen through Saturday night, becoming an even more intense storm by early next week.

However, experts say the storm's path narrowly avoids landfall, traveling north of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Still, the territory should expect some winds and large swell by the middle of next week.
