The quickest way to get caught up on the headlines, upcoming events, and everything else happening in the USVI.
Good morning and welcome to the Monday edition of the U.S. Virgin Islands Daily, where we round up the latest headlines, events, and what's actually worth reading on social media.
Here are the top stories this morning:
- The EPA and the Justice Department outlined the terms for restarting the former Limetree Bay Refinery. It has yet to be determined if the St. Croix refinery, now owned by West Indies Petroleum, can operate under the same permits that Limetree was able to operate under. When asked by WIPL lawyers, the Justice Department dodged the question: "EPA expects to send you a separate letter shortly regarding additional PSD permitting issues," the agency said. "It is very important to avoid any repeat of the incidents that occurred at the Refinery in the first half of 2021, involving emissions of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), uncombusted hydrocarbons, and/or flare rainout from the Refinery." Full story in The Source.
- Starting Thursday, parents and young children can join the Cradle Literacy Parent Webinar Series, an interactive reading program organized by the V.I. Department of Education. Learn more in The Daily News.
- A St. Croix woman was arrested after multiple homes in Estate Whim were damaged by bullets. Police say the damage was caused "by and under the direction of Rusiel Encarnacion." The woman who was arrested in Encarnacion's girlfriend. She has been charged with carrying a firearm and possession of ammunition. Encarnacion is still at large. Full story in the VI Consortium.
