Trump Vetoes Resolution Rejecting National Emergency: VIDEO

President Donald Trump signed his first presidential veto on Friday.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump signed his first presidential veto on Friday, nullifying the resolution passed by both houses of Congress that rejected the president's national emergency declaration that seeks to divert funds to build a border wall.

The resolution passed 59-41 in the U.S. Senate on Friday with 12 members of Trump's own party joining with Democrats to vote yes on the bill. Trump had said from the beginning that he would veto the resolution and tweeted just one word following the Senate vote in all caps-"VETO!"

Trump said from the Oval Office Friday afternoon that the situation along the southern border of the United States was "definitely a national emergency."

"Therefore, to defend the safety and security of all Americans I will be signing and issuing a formal veto of this reckless resolution," Trump said from the Oval Office. He also thanked Republican senators who were "on our side" and "on the side of border security."

The signing took place around 3:30 p.m. in the Oval Office. Congress does not have enough votes to override the veto.
