Living with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a survivor’s journey marked by isolation, misunderstanding, and resilience. My name is Craig Sears, and a motorcycle accident at age 20 changed my life in an instant. What began as physical recovery turned into a years-long battle against misdiagnosis, discrimination, and a system ill-equipped to understand or support TBI survivors.

Falling through the cracks, I was shuffled between mental health wards and institutions, repeatedly misunderstood by medical professionals, police, and courts. My symptoms were mistaken for criminal behavior, leading to unjust arrests and further trauma. Instead of compassion, I faced punishment—reflecting the deep prejudices that TBI survivors encounter every day.

With the unwavering support of my family, I rebuilt my life and found purpose in advocacy. I joined a class action lawsuit that helped secure the Connecticut ABI waiver, enabling community-based support for brain injury survivors. Still, my fight for justice continued, as I faced false accusations, fabricated evidence, and legal loopholes that shielded misconduct.

Through it all, I have kept detailed records and shared my experiences with advocates and policymakers to demand change and protect others. No two brain injuries are alike, but what unites us is the need for understanding, support, and justice. By telling my story, I hope to offer solidarity and hope to other survivors and to challenge the systemic failures that harm the most vulnerable.

You are not alone. Never give up hope.

“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.”
