Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre announces First Light: Winter Preview Performance on Thursday December 18 2025 at 7 and 8:30PM at Amanda Selwyn Dance Studio 412 Broadway 2nd Floor New York NY 10013. The company will preview Exposed part of its 26th Annual Performance Season. Exposed explores a raw relentlessness human drive to climb — physically emotionally and spiritually and the vulnerability vision and courage required to transcend and rise. Throughout the piece the dancers will transform the stage into a dynamic playground of semi-transparent steps and platforms that conceal distort confound beckon and demand resilience. The dancers move from being constrained and hidden in the maze of obstacles to an unburdening soaring with a potential of growth.

The 8:30 performance will be followed by a reception.

The Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre creates dynamic dance theatre that activates emotional expression. Through an interplay of athletic and articulate motion they present theatrical and immediate works that engage audiences from start to finish and beckon a response of thought feeling and soul.

Notes in Motion a vendor of NYC Department of Education offers inclusive in-school after-school and community programs that teach dance styles including ballet modern jazz African dance Latin dance hip hop tap musical theater and more. Dance programs combine technical skill-based instruction with creative expression and foster self-discovery risk-taking and individual leadership and are united by Amanda Selwyn Dance Company’s singular approach to dance education The Movement Exchange Method which combines technical instruction with creative skill-building and collaborative learning. Notes in Motion aims to provide access to the art form of dance to inspire the next generation of dance appreciators. In the last three years the dance education programs have grown from 87 programs and 45 school partners per year to 163 programs and 75 school partners. This year Notes in Motion brought dance to 21000 students and delivered 4400 program sessions throughout NYC. Programs directly benefit underserved communities who have historically faced a lack of arts education.

Amanda Selwyn (Artistic Director/Choreographer) founded Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion in 2000 and in 26 seasons has directed over 130 productions developed a network of artists and created Notes in Motion’s dance education program. Amanda recently taught workshops and residencies at Peridance Hofstra University NYU SUNY New Paltz BMCC Baruch New Women NY the NY Gender Conference and Temple University. Her work has been presented twice on Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out at Tribeca PAC American Dance Guild Festival DUMBO Dance Festival APAP COOL NY Wassaic Dance WestFest Movement Research Dixon Place NYU’s Women and Theater conference Dance Teacher Summit and Pushing Progress. Amanda led workshops at 3 Face to Face conferences. Grants: NYSCA Harkness Foundation Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Hyde and Watson Foundation Friars Foundation Dizzy Feet Foundation Bronx Arts Council DCLA NYC Council Manhattan Borough President Met Life City National Bank Credit Suisse and Bossak/Heilbron Foundation. Amanda participated in the Choreographer's Lab program at Jacob's Pillow. She has a 500-hour yoga teacher's certification and teaches yoga privately and at Crunch Gym. She holds a Master’s degree from NYU Tisch and a B.S. from Northwestern University with a focus on theatre women's studies and dance.

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre announces its 2026 Winter Intensive, running January 2–5, 2026. Tickets for a one-day drop-in workshop are $110, and tickets for the whole weekend of classes $550. All events take place at Amanda Selwyn Dance Studio, 412 Broadway, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10013. Classes include Modern, Ballet, and Jazz Technique, Conditioning, Yoga, Improvisation, Company Repertory, and Creative/Choreography.

The Winter Intensive will immerse young dancers in a variety of technique classes, company repertory, and a creative process in which participants collaborate to create a new modern dance piece. The program culminates in an end-of-week showing, showcasing the dancers’ growth and artistry. In addition to studio training, lunch-time sessions provide valuable coaching in nutrition, cross-training, audition preparation, and more, equipping dancers with the tools they need for a sustainable and successful career.

About the AAPI Dance Festival
The AAPI Dance Festival is an annual celebration of dance and choreography that highlights the artistry and innovation of choreographers of Asian descent, presented as part of the Dance Managers Collective’s APAP showcase at City Center and the Ailey Citigroup Theatre.

KBI 2026 will take place June 22, 2026–August 15, 2026.

Session 4: August 3–August 15, 2026

Auditions will be led by Kaatsbaan’s Artistic Director, Paloma Herrera. Kaatsbaan co-founders and faculty members, Kevin McKenzie and Martine van Hamel, will also be in attendance.

Auditions will last an hour and a half.

Please arrive with enough time to check-in. There will be no waiting area inside the building for parents. Please plan to drop dancers off and return at the end of the audition. Girls should wear a solid color leotard, pink tights, and should have both flat and pointe shoes. Boys should wear black tights and a white shirt.

Situated on 153 acres of rolling countryside, Kaatsbaan is a sanctuary for artists seeking inspiration and tranquility. Our campus offers an idyllic environment for focused practice and relaxation.

Dancers will have access to world-class dance studios equipped with sprung floors, large windows, barres, and mirrors, creating an optimal learning environment.

Kaatsbaan offers options for either onsite boarding (limited availability) as well as day students in the beautiful Hudson Valley in Upstate New York.

Joining the Kaatsbaan Ballet Intensive means becoming a part of a vibrant artistic community. You’ll have the chance to interact with fellow dancers, choreographers, and visiting artists, creating lasting connections in the dance world.

To honor the Year of the Horse, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company presents two major new works:
● Lawrence Jin, a native of Hohhot, Inner Mongolia and graduate of the Beijing Dance Academy, will present a newly revised version of Mongolian Festival, celebrating northern China's nomadic horseback culture. Jin’s storied career includes principal roles with the Beijing Youth Dance Company and Bella Lewitzky Dance Company; today, he teaches at FA Dance School in New Jersey and continues to contribute to cultural exchange through choreography.

● Zhongmei Li will present an excerpt of Ultimate Journey, a forthcoming full-evening piece inspired by the Dunhuang Caves' ancient murals from the Silk Road era, evoking themes of cultural exploration, spiritual passage, and the transformative spirit embodied by the horse archetype.

The performance is the culmination of a year-long residency at Kaatsbaan in 2025, during which Maeve wrote a solo-harp composition each month. Into 12 Dances, she interweaves site-specific recordings, poetry, and visual stimulation she gathered each day while at Kaatsbaan.

Known for her ethereal soundscapes, intricate-interweaving voices, and dynamically rhythmic compositions, Maeve leads us carefully through her own reverent cycle of nature, color, and humanity. In a time of political and environmental shifts, this project is a marked noticing of the absolute wonder of our ordinary world, one month at a time in her adopted home of the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Founded in 2016 by WHITE WAVE’s Artistic Director Young Soon Kim, the SoloDuo Dance Festival showcases 34 exceptional dancemakers from the New York Metro area, across the United States, and around the world—including artists from China, Israel, Korea, Mexico, and Poland. Participating artists were selected by a distinguished panel of presenters and dance professionals.

In 2025, WHITE WAVE Dance partnered with the ChangMu International Dance Festival in Seoul, Korea, to launch the SoloDuo Dance Festival New York | Seoul. Through this collaboration, two outstanding companies from our 2025 SoloDuo Dance Festival—Sean Howe Dance (New York) and Rebecca Laufer and Mats van Rossum (Netherlands)—were selected to perform at the ChangMu International Dance Festival in August in Seoul.

Building on this successful partnership, two companies from our 2026 SoloDuo Dance Festival will once again be selected and invited to perform in Seoul in 2026, continuing this exciting international exchange.

Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute has partnered with ELF and the legendary New York artist Machine Dazzle to create MAN WOMAN, a collaboration between Butoh dancers Akihito Ichihara (Sankai Juku) and Vangeline.

Ichihara and Vangeline have developed MAN WOMAN during New York residencies at the New York Butoh Institute, Chelsea Factory, Monira Foundation, and Mercury Store in 2024.

Machine Dazzle has created original costumes for this 60-minute piece and Ray Barragan Sweeten has composed the music.

MAN WOMAN is a 60-minute interdisciplinary Butoh duet about the search for intimacy and the complexities of human connection. Choreographed and performed by acclaimed Butoh artists Akihito Ichihara (Japan) and Vangeline (U.S.), the work draws inspiration from the seminal 1960 photo book Man and Woman by Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe, which featured Tatsumi Hijikata—the founder of Butoh—and his wife, Motofuji.
 
Ichihara and Vangeline each come from different Butoh backgrounds; Ichihara from Sankai Juku, or what could be considered “classical” Butoh, while Vangeline’s 20 years of Butoh expertise was informed by her prior experience as a jazz and burlesque dancer. The artists imagine this encounter as cultural cross-pollination: the creation of something new and original choreographically, challenging aesthetic expectations and carrying Butoh into the 21st century.
