About the author – John Heil has more than 30 years of communications experience. Currently the public information officer for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, he most recently served as Deputy Assistant Regional Director for Communications with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Department of Interior in the Pacific Southwest Region, overseeing features, media relations, digital platforms, tribal relations, and public affairs. He also spent a decade with the U.S. Forest Service.
