The Livingston Public Library invites the public to an in-person Senior Happening on Friday, February 20th at 1pm featuring “It's Today! The Showtunes of Jerry Herman” by Susie Spiedel and Joseph Regan. This performance will feature a celebration of the career of Broadway composer Jerry Herman, including selections from his greatest hits, such as Hello, Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage Aux Folles, plus a few of his lesser-known shows such as Dear World and The Grand Tour.
Susan Speidel served as the Director of Education for Papermill Playhouse, where she oversaw the operations of the Theater School and created the Rising Star Awards, the Summer Musical Theatre Training program, and the Adopt-A-School Project, which was cited for excellence by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She is a three-time Perry Award nominee and the recipient of numerous MSU Theatre Night Awards, the NJ Governor’s Award for Theatre Education, and the NJ Theatre Alliance’s Applause Award. She was recently inducted into the NJACT Hall of Fame for her contributions to theater and arts education.
Joe Regan is a fixture on the cabaret scene, appearing in piano bars, on international river cruises and at various resorts. He performs regularly at Don’t Tell Mama in NYC and 16 Prospect in Westfield and can also be seen online on Virtual Piano Bar. He has been nominated numerous times as Outstanding Piano Bar Instrumentalist by the Manhattan Association of Cabaret. He is also a teaching artist for the Performing Arts School at The MAYO Performing Arts Center in Morristown.
The Senior Happening is a monthly series that allows attendees (“Seniors” or otherwise) to socialize during the first part of the program (12 until 12:45 pm) by bringing a bag lunch, while enjoying desserts and coffee served by the Friends of the Library volunteers. The program and entertainment then begins at 1 pm.

Get ready to fire up your core and energize your entire body with this monthly All-Levels Adult Mat Pilates Fitness Class that blends strength, stability, and mobility training to help you move smarter, feel stronger, and elevate your everyday wellness. 
Mat Pilates is a powerful, low-impact workout that builds long, lean muscles, improves posture, and boosts your balance and coordination — all, while focusing on controlled, precise movements performed on the floor in a fun, motivating flow. By using your own body weight and breath to guide each motion, you’ll strengthen your core, tone muscles, improve posture, build stability and enhance body alignment.
Led by Luisa Kaiser, a certified Mat Pilates, Yoga, and Kids Yoga instructor known for her upbeat coaching and encouraging energy, this class is designed to make you feel empowered from the inside out. Expect controlled, athletic movements, intentional breathwork, and accessible variations so every participant can work at their own level while still getting an invigorating full-body workout.
Whether you’re new to Pilates or already living the fitness lifestyle, you’ll leave class feeling stronger, more energized, and confidently connected to your body.
Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga or Pilates mat, wear comfortable workout clothing, and bring water. You are also welcome to bring any small Pilates props you may already own, such as resistance bands, Pilates rings, or small stability balls. These are completely optional — the entire class can also be done with just a mat.
This session is open to adults 18 and up. Space is limited; Registration is encouraged.

For nearly two centuries, passenger rail has played a defining role in shaping America’s landscape and identity—from powerful steam locomotives to the gleaming streamliners that once symbolized modernity and adventure, to today’s Amtrak trains connecting cities and communities in the Northeast Corridor and across vast distances. Although automobiles and air travel have long dominated U.S. transportation, passenger trains continue to capture the American imagination, offering a window into the nation’s history, geography, and social fabric.
Inspired by his recent cross-country train journey from Chicago to Los Angeles, Keith Danish invites you on a fascinating exploration of U.S. passenger rail travel—its past, present, and possible future. His presentation will trace the evolution of passenger rail service in America, touching on its economic, cultural, political, culinary, musical, and even poetical dimensions. Keith will explain how Amtrak came into existence and how, buoyed by substantial federal infrastructure funding, it now looks toward a future that may be stable—but not necessarily “high-speed” in the sense familiar to travelers in Europe or Asia.
Keith will also examine the challenges and opportunities facing the next era of American passenger rail—whether it can expand, modernize, and meet the needs of a changing nation.
A retired attorney who specialized in Intellectual Property Law, Keith Danish serves on the Executive Board of the N.Y. Labor History Association and is the association’s Newsletter and Book Review Editor. He was formerly on the Board of Trustees of the Institute of New Dimensions (IND), a nonprofit lifelong-learning organization offering short college-level courses for adults. Keith has lectured widely on topics ranging from law and the U.S. Supreme Court to baseball’s business and labor history and American cultural history.

Yoga offers a powerful blend of physical strength, mental clarity, and stress relief—helping you build flexibility, enhance focus, and cultivate inner peace. Join the Livingston Public Library’s monthly yoga session led by a certified instructor from Niyama Yoga Shala, and experience the transformative benefits of regular practice.
This Open Level Vinyasa Flow class links yoga poses (asanas) with breath in a smooth, flowing sequence. The session will incorporate mindful movement, traditional breathing techniques (pranayama), and inspiring music to help spark the mind–body connection and release stagnant energy.
All levels are welcome—no prior yoga experience is required. The instructor will offer modifications and variations so each participant can practice safely and effectively, regardless of experience or ability. You’ll leave feeling balanced, refreshed, and renewed.

Join Dr. Michael Gross for a captivating one-hour presentation that takes you on a virtual tour of 29 exceptional public gardens that are members of the Garden State Gardens Consortium. Through vivid imagery and engaging storytelling, Dr. Gross highlights the history, design, and distinctive features of each garden—some world-famous, others hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Dr. Gross holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and accounting from Lebanon Valley College and a Ph.D. in Marine Studies from the University of Delaware. He has been Director of the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum at Georgian Court University since 2001, where he has also served as a professor of biology since 1992. He is currently the secretary of the Garden State Gardens Consortium.

For much of the early 20th century, comedy was considered a man’s game—but a fearless group of funny women stepped up to the mic, took over our screens, and changed the rules of laughter forever. From Lucille Ball’s unforgettable physical comedy on I Love Lucy to Carol Burnett’s groundbreaking variety show, from Phyllis Diller’s outrageous one-liners to Joan Rivers’ razor-sharp wit, women comedians not only made America laugh, they carved out lasting space in a male-dominated field.
This entertaining lecture will spotlight some of the trailblazing performers who defined an era, including Totie Fields, Gilda Radner, and Tina Fey, among others. We’ll revisit their most iconic sketches and routines, explore how they challenged stereotypes, and celebrate the joy and impact of their comedy.
Get ready for a fun-filled trip down memory lane with the women who proved that humor is—and always has been—a woman’s game too.
This engaging talk is led by Larry Wolfert, a native of 1960s Brooklyn, who grew up immersed in the rhythms of folk music and the wit of sharp stand-up comedy. After a 40+ year career in corporate America, Larry turned his lifelong passion into a second act, teaching courses at Lifelong Learning Institutes and colleges. Rather than writing essays or sermons, Larry weaves together the life stories and punchlines of comedians into thoughtful, humorous presentations that both entertain and enlighten.

Laughter Unleashed: Women Who Shaped 20th-Century Comedy

The “Mothers” of America aren’t often mentioned – the women whose influence on the early years of the United States reverberated for centuries afterwards. While many of us remember reading something about Martha Washington and Abigail Adams, there are so many more women to admire. Whether they assisted in the years-long Revolutionary War, or had one brief moment of heroism, their actions had long-lasting and nation-building effects. 
This illustrated virtual lecture focuses on the remarkable women who had a first-hand view of the founding of our nation, and whose stories need to be shared. Join Laura Keyes as she shares their history, their bravery, and their surprising legacies. Learn about soldiers, writers, printers, scholars, farmers, artists, and spies – all women, and all vital to our nation’s history.
Laura Keyes graduated from UW-Madison with a Master’s Degree in Library Studies, and has been portraying women from history and lecturing on historic topics for over fifteen years. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Wheels O' Time Museum, the Association of Lincoln Presenters, and the Illinois Library Association. In her non-existent spare time, Laura is a wonderful baker and accomplished vocalist.

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to our Senior Happening event on Friday, March 20th at 1pm featuring “Lecture-in-Song: How Ya Gonna Keep Em Down on the Farm?” performed by Fred Miller. 
There is no better way to experience the continuous, dramatic shifts and spirit in twentieth century American life than to delve into its popular music. To that end, pianist/singer/narrator Fred Miller has been presenting his extensive series of Lectures-In-Song for nearly a decade. Each of the 60+ different Lectures examines through anecdote and song some personality or important aspect of America's Golden Age of Popular Song. During this performance, attendees will explore immigration, world war, and the new music of 1892 - 1919. 
Fred Miller is the founder of the Copper Penny Players, a singing class for amateurs that has been operating for the past quarter century. He has experience in many different musical fields, including opera, comedy and piano music. There are now more than seventy Lecture-in-Song programs that he performs around New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

From an early age, Leydi discovered her talent for helping others, solving problems, and creating order—skills that naturally led her to a career as a professional organizer. After a successful 20-year career in Higher Education Administration, she combined her organizational expertise and lifelong passion for design to launch her own business, helping clients transform their spaces with style and function.

Organizing for Everyday Life: Systems That Simplify Your Home

For the 250th anniversary of the birthday of our nation, see the American Revolution through a different perspective. 
Carol Simon Levin portrays Catharine “Caty” Greene, the indomitable wife of Nathanael Greene, one of Gen. George Washington’s most valued officers and good friend to many other revolutionary notables. 

Caty spent much of the war joining her husband and the other officers as they moved from one battlefront to another (many in New Jersey. Known as a witty ranconteur, she enlivened the spirits of officers and troops alike as the war ranged from New Jersey to South Carolina, famously dancing for 3 hours straight with George Washington. Her wit, pluck and courage carried her through both victories and setbacks not only during the war but throughout a remarkable life full of resilience and reinvention. 

Carol Simon Levin is a professional storyteller and independent historian who specializes in telling the stories of “fascinating women history forgot” through first person portrayals. 

Carol is the founder of Telling Her Stories and was a 2020 NJ Council for the Humanities Public Scholar presenting “Reclaiming Our Voice: NJ’s Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage” which she also published as an article in March 2020 online issue of Garden State Legacy. She is the author of the book Remembering the Ladies: From Patriots in Petticoats to Presidential Candidates<a href="https://tellingherstories.com/book-remembering-the-ladies/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> </a>(which profiles 69 women – well-known and unknown – who worked tirelessly for women’s rights in America) and co-author (with Joy Tsuzuki) of Joy’s memoir A Child of Two Cultures: Growing Up in the U.S. &amp; Japan amidst WWII. Carol holds a BA focusing on women’s history and history of technology from Cornell University and a Masters in Library Services from the University of Arizona. She is a New Jersey Council for the Humanities Public Scholar, a member of the New Jersey Storytelling Network, the National Women’s History Alliance, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Catharine “Caty” Greene: Eyewitness to the American Revolution

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to join us for a Senior Happening performance on Friday, April 17th at 1pm where Stephen Fuller will present “Expressions of the Heart.” Vocalist Stephen Fuller and his fantastic trio, Tomoko Ohno, piano; Alex Gressel, bass and Gordon Lane, drums, will take you on a musical journey which will showcase the music based off of his 2013 soundtrack “Expressions of the Heart.”
Stephen Fuller, a Newark native, is well known about town. His interest in singing began at age 12, when a teacher recognized his musical gift. He attended the Newark Arts High School and Colgate University, where he studied Sociology and Music, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. This dynamic bass/baritone sings to packed houses, across the predominantly upscale supper club circuit, on either side of the Hudson River

The Livingston Public Library invites you to join us for our June Senior Happening performance on Friday, June 26 at 1pm where Angelo Uccello will present “A Musical Afternoon.” 
Join vocalist Angelo Uccello for a lively performance of timeless Italian favorites, featuring popular songs made famous by legends like Sinatra and Engelbert — with plenty of opportunities for the audience to sing along and join the fun!
Angelo Uccello is a classical pianist and composer, online piano teacher, and automotive journalist. Uccello’s debut album, the Italian titled “Quando Diciamo Addio” was released in late 2012, and has since been delighting listeners. Uccello performs locally in the New Jersey area.

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to our Senior Happening event on Friday, November 20th at 1pm featuring “Lecture-in-Song: Happy Days are Here Again” performed by Fred Miller.

Senior Happening: Fred Miller Presents "Happy Days are Here Again!

The Livingston Public Library invites the public to the premiere of our 2026 Senior Happening performances on Friday, December 19 at 1pm where David Podles will present “Winter Fairytales.” 
Commemorating the silvery delights that Winter brings us, Acclaimed International Concert Violinist Dr. David Podles will perform music that pays tribute to all that is Winter time plus the holidays that are celebrated in winter. Follow him through the brisk winter twilight in the forest of snowy pine trees and will hear a lilting melody in the distance by Tchaikovsky &amp; Rachmaninoff, Bing Crosby's Winter Wonderland will make you want to cozy up by the fire and then ABBA will help you ring in the New Year! Plus many more artists and music! This program covers pop, classical, folk and jazz genres.
David is a laureate of three prestigious international competitions and graduated with a PhD in music from the Music Conservatory in Riga, Latvia. He has performed with orchestras and in solos worldwide. In the US, David has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, 92nd Street Y, and Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center.
The Senior Happening is a monthly series that allows attendees (“Seniors” or otherwise) to socialize during the first part of the program (12 until 12:45 pm) by bringing a bag lunch, while enjoying desserts and coffee served by the Friends of the Library volunteers. The program and entertainment then begins at 1 pm.
Registration is required and may be done in person at the library; by telephone at (973) 992-4600; or online at www.livingstonlibrary.org. Registration begins on November 30th for Livingston and other Essex County residents.
Senior Happening is made possible in part by funds from the Essex County Division of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and through the support from the Friends of the Livingston Library.
