The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center

Yellowstone National Park contains many stories, including one of the best case studies in wildlife conservation. Wildlife biologist and National Geographic Explorer Doug Smith led the project that reintroduced gray wolves in the 1990s. We join him on assignment in the park to see how the landscape has changed since the wolves arrived, including never-before-seen photos and videos of the quest to bring back this apex predator.

Famed for his attacking, take-no-prisoners playing style, Cuban-born pianist and composer Alfredo Rodriguez has a back story that has become the stuff of legend: the kid who, without constant access to a piano, practiced on scales he’d painted on the family dinner table; who, aged 19, represented Cuba in the International Solo Piano Competition at the 2016 Montreux Jazz Festival, just happening to entertain a crowd that included Quincy Jones, who was so bowled over he encouraged his permanent relocation from embargoed Cuba to America. Ephrat Asherie collaborates with GRAMMY® award-winning pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill on the company’s newest creation, Shadow Cities, a reflection on the beauty, vastness and joy of the in-between. Bringing together Asherie’s innovative and rigorous choreography with O’Farrill’s singular and mesmerizing sound, Shadow Cities is a beautiful extension of EAD’s dedication to working with live music. With a cast of 6 dancers and 4 musicians, this work explores what it means to stay afloat in the in-between. We are split between cities, memories and generations; we are an amalgam of cultures, fully embodied and fragmented all at once; our movements are concurrently malleable and explosive, our identities fixed and infinitely fluid. Whether as immigrants, BIPOC identities or first generation Americans, this feeling of in-betweenness connects everyone in the work as we ask how and why—halfway between so many disparate extremes in time, space and state—we often feel our most enlivened selves. It is from this vivid place that Shadow Cities comes to life.

With The Bad Plus, acclaimed artists Chris Potter and Craig Taborn revisit the formative repertoire of Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet. The project is not simply a tribute to one of jazz’s most influential ensembles, it’s a continuation of the American Quartet’s spirit: a fearless commitment to musical dialogue, emotional depth, and boundary-pushing improvisation.

This whirlwind program will spotlight examples by famous composers such as Bach and Telemann, alongside some unjustly neglected Baroque masters, illustrating the immense expressive range and creativity of this repertoire. With a few strokes of the two violins and cello bows and animation of the harpsichord’s keys, let yourself be teleported from the Venice of Albinoni and Gentili to the Naples of Porpora, with a visit to Telemann and Bach in Germany.
