Built in 1811, Historic Oakland is truly one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in Howard County, Maryland. It’s rich history spans back to 1688 before Howard County was formed when John Dorsey acquired an 1,100 acre tract of land that would eventually become Historic Oakland. In 1811, then a Speaker of the House of Delegates, Charles Sterrett Ridgely constructed Oakland as a country home to supplement his home in Baltimore. Originally built in the federal style by Abraham Lerew, a Baltimore housewright, Oakland is now a blend of Federal, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival periods.
