Founded by Everett McCorvey, Music Worcester’s 2026 <a href="https://www.musicworcester.org/residency/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Artist in Residence</a>, American Spiritual Ensemble performs across the world celebrating the roots of American music – the Negro Spiritual. Negro spirituals are folksongs that emerged in the American South and were passed through oral tradition, shared in and outside the church. An element of the spiritual that lives on is the use of “call-and-response” (when singers repeat the leader’s sung lines) in music. While some spirituals use biblical imagery and reference, others don’t; the history of this music is rooted in strength, the search for freedom, and community. 
Join Music Worcester in celebrating the roots of Negro Spirituals and the premiere of Artist-in-Residence Everett McCorvey.

<h1>The Worcester Chorus and the Winchendon Players</h1>
The Winchendon Players are members of the Winchendon Music Festival, a multi-genre music festival featuring artists from across the globe. The ensemble joins with the Worcester Chorus for a performance of three sections from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio – written for chamber orchestra, chorus, and soloists. The work by J.S. Bach is exuberant and boisterous, and is a joyous continuation of the holiday season.

Despite its name, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio isn’t only for December. The Christmas Oratorio is a collection of six cantatas historically performed at different points throughout the Christmas/Advent season, and is divided into different sections that tell the story of the Christmas season. Composer John Harbison describes Bach’s Christmas Oratorio as Germany’s “seasonal equivalent to the English-speaking world’s Messiah” with its overarching message of jubilation and grandiose. Come see for yourself why this work has lived on for hundreds of years.

Boston-based Emmanuel Music is an ensemble that was formed with the goal of weekly performances of Bach’s cantatas, in residence at Boston’s historic Emmanuel Church. “At Emmanuel Music, we find in the power, brilliance, and immediacy of Bach’s music a poignant representation of the human condition and humanity’s relationship with something beyond itself, which can be called ‘the divine.’” (Pamela Dellal) Emmanuel Music continues their cantata cycle, with in depth notes and translations of each cantata.

<h1>Refugee Orchestra Project</h1>

The Refugee Orchestra Project was founded in 2016 as a way to unite refugee musicians. Since its inception, Refugee Orchestra Project has performed with ensembles and artists like the London Symphony Orchestra, Chi-chi Nwanoko, Gity Razaz, and more. 
Their current Artist-in-Residence, Milad Yousufi, is a multi-media artist, composer, and conductor. He’s working with the ensemble to bring the sound of Afghan music to the stage through concerts featuring a collection of soloists and instrumentations. Yousufi is no stranger to Music Worcester: in 2019, Music Worcester commissioned Milad to compose a work for the South High Community School chamber brass band titled “Salam Alik”.

<h2>Nelson Goerner: Liszt &amp; Albéniz</h2>
Nelson Goerner, noted for his versatility at the keyboard, has toured with many of the world’s major orchestras – Orchestre de Paris, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie. Audiences will be wowed by his interpretation of Franz Liszt, inspired by his presentation of Isaac Albéniz, and charmed by the dance-like nature found in piano music from Hungary and Spain. These two works by Liszt are opposing sides of a coin. While Ballade no. 2 is dramatic and passionate, showing off the player’s virtuosity (which Liszt wrote to show off his own skill), Valse oubliée No.2 is more delicate, displaying the player’s personality and attention to musical choices. 
“There is really nothing in Isaac Albeniz’s ”Iberia” that a good three-handed pianist could not master, given unlimited years of practice and permission to play at half tempo. But there are few pianists thus endowed.” (Donal Henahan, The New York Times)
The program continues with Iberia, Book IV, Albéniz’s collection of three piano pieces. These works drop hints to dance, are impressionistic, and overall feature the character of both instrument and performer. Both Claude Debussy and Oliver Messiaen praised this work (Albéniz’s best-known work, in fact) as a “wonder for the piano”.

The Sebastians are a period instrument ensemble that perform music of the classical and baroque eras, recognized by The New York Times as “sharp edged and engaging” and praised by I Care If You Listen for their “beautifully-nuanced playing and thoughtful expressivity”. Their self-directed performances are as engaging as they are pristine, performing works such as St. Matthew Passion with expertise. Headlining Bach’s Birthday Bash, the group performs the six Brandenburg Concertos (or as they were originally named, Concerts avec plusieurs Instruments), among the most well known concertos that survive from the Baroque Era. They were dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg, and it is thought that these works were requested because of Bach’s compositional talent, his attention to individualising each instrument’s place within the work.
Each Concerto has a different personality. For example, Concerto no. 4 is extremely delicate in both instrumentation and scoring; Concerto no. 1 has a different form and highlights contrast in both thematic material and the nods to humor(!) in the writing for certain instruments. These works feature an array of historical instruments, allowing the listener to hear how Bach expected these works to be presented to audiences.

Worcester Chamber Music Society, featuring their pianist Randall Hodgkinson, delivers an exquisite rendition of J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering. The ensemble brings their tight-knit artistry to this music written for celebration.
Bach’s Musical Offering is a collection of keyboard works based on thematic material provided to Bach by Frederick the Great. Written as a celebratory work, this piece introduces a six voice fugue played across instruments throughout the work.
This program also features Bach’s Italian Concerto and Toccata in f sharp minor. The latter is one of seven toccatas for keyboard without pedal, and is intricate and expansive. The key of f sharp minor was less commonly used at the time, and was seen as dark, passionate, and moody. In contrast, the Italian Concerto was written as a solo concerto to imitate the grandiose of an ensemble. Bach used elaborate ornamentation, well-designed cadences, and a balance of showiness and rule-following in composition, allowing the Italian Concerto to be seen as the “ideal solo concerto”.

Music Worcester Presents: The Musical Offering | Worcester Chamber Music Society

In Music Worcester’s second annual Cantatathon, Worcester Bach Collective ensembles perform a selection of cantatas at Mechanics Hall.
A cantata is a vocal work for solo/chorus and orchestra, either celebrating sacred or secular traditions. These works are conversations between voice and instrument and are meant to spotlight the technicality of the performer. Over the course of THE COMPLETE BACH’s eleven years, ensembles will present each of Bach’s cantatas. At intermission, join us for cake and champagne in honor of Bach’s 341st birthday.
