Scott Viau was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and received his bachelor's degree in English from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. He worked for the student newspaper, The North Wind, while in college. After graduation, he was employed by The Daily Mining Gazette in Houghton, Michigan, where he worked as a reporter, editor and page designer.
