First Day Hikes 2026 In VA: 44 State Parks To Visit

First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative to draw people outdoors on New Year's Day 2026. Check out where to hike in Virginia.

Work off the holiday sweets and shake off the cabin fever outdoors as part of the nationwide First Day Hikes initiative on New Year’s Day with a visit to one of 44 Virginia State Parks.

Taking a hike to inspire those New Year resolutions centered on getting or keeping fit is the perfect family-friendly activity. First Day Hikes is an initiative of America's State Parks, and hikes are offered in state parks across the country. We have many hikes and opportunities to choose from, or you can visit a park of your choosing and create your own special First Day Hike. It's the perfect time to start your Trail Quest!

As part of this annual tradition led by America’s State Parks, parking is free at all Virginia State Park locations on Jan. 1, 2026. Visitors will also receive a commemorative sticker, while supplies last, to mark the occasion.

Each park offers something unique — from leisurely strolls to challenging hikes. Whether you're looking to get some exercise, spend time with family or simply enjoy nature, there's an adventure for everyone.

New this year, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will host a few guided hikes at natural area preserves, which are managed by the Virginia Natural Heritage Program. The agency will offer guided hikes at these preserves:

Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve, Stafford

Address: 81 Raven Road, Stafford

Time: Jan. 1, 2026 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

DESCRIPTION of hike: Participants can expect a 4- to 5-mile hike along the Boykin’s Landing Trail with views over Potomac Creek and the Potomac River. Crow’s Nest supports over 2,300 acres of mature coastal plain hardwood forest and 900 acres of tidal and non-tidal wetlands, providing habitat for several rare plant and animal species.

Space will be limited to 15 participants. Register by emailing Michael.Lott@dcr.virginia.gov by Dec. 30.

Suitable for kids 10 and under? Yes

Pets permitted? No

Dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, and bring water and snacks.

A portable toilet facility is available at the public parking area.

Grassy Hill Natural Area Preserve, Franklin County

Address: Parking available at the Rocky Mount YMCA: 235 Technology Drive, Rocky Mount

Time: Jan. 1, 2026 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

DESCRIPTION of hike: Meet at the Kiosk just east of the Gereau Center for a moderate, 4.2-mile hike up several hundred feet in elevation to the ridgeline of Grassy Hill. Hikers will enjoy excellent views to the north and south. Hikers will also get to observe and learn more about the effects of prescribed fire as a tool for restoring healthy forests and open woodlands.

Space will be limited to 15 participants. Register by emailing Ryan.Klopf@dcr.virginia.gov by Dec. 30.

Suitable for kids 10 and under? Yes, very reasonable for kids 8 and up.

Pets permitted? No

Dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, and bring water and snacks.

There are no toilets available on Grassy Hill NAP.

Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve, Russell County

Address: 891 State Park Road, Honaker

Time: Jan. 1, 2026 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

DESCRIPTION of hike: Participants can expect a 4- to 5-mile hike along Big Cedar Creek – a state scenic river – to its confluence with the Clinch River. Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve is characterized by fascinating geological formations and a diverse array of rare plants, animals and natural communities. The preserve is located within the Clinch River watershed, which contains the highest number of globally-imperiled freshwater species in the continental United States.

Space will be limited to 15 participants. Register by emailing Claiborne.Woodall@dcr.virginia.gov by Dec. 30.

Most parks offer more than one guided hike or program during the day, so be sure to visit the park’s web page for more information.

Here are some activities to consider for your First Day Hike:

Dogs are welcome on any of the hikes (unless noted elsewhere) as long as they are on a leash no longer than 6 feet. The special hikes with a dog include programs that focus on walking with your dog on the trails, so be sure to visit the park’s page for details.
